NXP today announces the expansion of its popular portfolio of Home Gateway solutions, with new offerings at both the high-performance and value tiers of the market. The portfolio’s common platform approach is now leveraged across a wide range of power and performance points, all while sharing common build environments, APIs and software. Based on the OpenWrt operating system, the platform seamlessly offloads packet processing to a power-efficient hardware accelerator, enabling dramatic boosts in throughput and quality of service, while freeing CPU resources for value-added applications and services.
Enabling the platform’s outstanding scalability is NXP’s industry-leading portfolio of embedded 64-bit processors based on ARM® Cortex® technology. Already in production on NXP’s dual-core QorIQ LS1024A device, the Home/SMB platform now includes versions incorporating the tiny, power-sipping QorIQ LS1012A processor, the quad-core QorIQ LS1043A device, as well as NXP’s new QorIQ LS1046 SoC featuring dual 10Gb ports, pin-compatibility with the LS1043A, and the exceptional performance of four 64-bit ARM Cortex-A72 cores. With these additions, NXP’s solution is now the only ARM 64-bit based-Home Gateway platform to scale from single core to quad-core powered 64-bit solutions.
“Broadband operators are looking for a scalable and upgradeable gateway platform which maximizes return on investment and lets them focus on value-added applications and services,” said Noy Kucuk, Vice President of Product Management for NXP’s Digital Networking Business Unit. “By extending its popular line of Home/Small Business Gateway solutions, NXP has squarely met this demand, delivering a proven software platform backed by a large global software team, and the broadest range of communications processors in the industry.”
Extreme Performance at the Network’s Edge
NXP’s new QorIQ LS1046 device opens the door to compelling new capabilities for the NXP Home/SMB gateway’s high-end offering. In addition to delivering 20 Gbps bi-directional wireline and 10 Gbps WiFi performance, the processor’s four ARM Cortex-A72 cores deliver additional performance headroom to support a wide range of compelling new gateway applications and use models including:
Software Re-use for IoT Gateways and Wi-Fi Extenders
The ultra low-power LS1012A device is also suitable for Wi-Fi extenders, battery-backed IoT gateways and even fully battery-powered applications. Support for the NXP Home/SMB gateway platform on the LS1012A means that customers can leverage a common software architecture across all of their gateway devices in the home, reducing overall development investments and simplifying support and maintenance.
