NXP Semiconductors would like to applaud the House Energy and Commerce Committee and Chairman Walden (R-OR) for holding a hearing this week on data protection and identity verification in the wake of several large scale data breaches such as those reported by Equifax and Yahoo.
The hearing, entitled, “Identity Verification in a Post-Breach World” will be conducted by the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations on November 30 at 10:15 a.m. in Room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building, with the purpose of considering how government and industry securely verify identities and protect personal data online in the aftermath of these breaches.
The timing of this hearing is critical as disruptive information technologies, such as data management in the cloud, the Internet of Things (IoT), and the proliferation of sensors and mobile devices are creating many opportunities to provide new services and benefits to the public. Unfortunately, the side effects caused by security weaknesses has led to scores of victims of fraud and identity theft, compromising the public’s trust in the privacy and security of their personal data online. Companies and governments around the world are now rethinking how to employ secure electronic credentials that protect personal information such as name, date of birth and address, as well as financial, medical and other private information—all while enhancing the consumer’s service experience. NXP is working with governments worldwide and investing millions of dollars each year to drive the development of microprocessors with advanced security features that provide secure solutions for identity protection, and exceed the market’s requirements for strong consumer authentication technology.
NXP looks forward to this week’s hearing and supporting the efforts of the Committee and Congress as it works to enhance the security and privacy of personal data online.
